Residential building on Gogol street

Architect Johann Wilhelm Edel

A two-story residential building at the intersection of Gogol, 14 and Nizami (formerly Torgovaya) streets, 58 was built in 1896 according to the design of the German architect John Wilhelm Edel (1863 - 14.02.1932). The third floor was added in 1954.

The building occupies a corner position and, thanks to the facades using classical techniques in the order system, plays an important role in the surrounding buildings. The high quality of construction, the culture of drawing architectural details and the plasticity of the three-dimensional solution make it possible to classify the building as an architectural monument of the late XIX - early XX century.

In southern climatic countries, such as Azerbaijan, light and shadow play an active role in enlivening the spatial structure on the surface of buildings. The architect John Edel willingly used this natural factor.
It can be said that at the intersection of these two central and busy streets, the architect John Edel created a small ensemble and enriched the spatial structure of the city.
